Controlling the length of your article

This guide is for controlling the length of fully automated articles, alternatively you can create custom outlines to fully control your output.

Overview

Machined lets you control the length of your articles. It does this by controlling the number of sections in the outline, assuming that the average section has about 400 words. A section is defined as any H2 with all of its child content.

The table below shows how many sections and words are generated on average:

Length
Average sections (+/- 1)
Average words (+/- 400)

Short

2

800

Medium

4

1600

Long

6

2400

Very Long

3200

The example below has 3 sections and will be roughly 1200 words.

Controlling the length

From the cluster view, use the Length dropdowns to change the length for each individual article or all of the articles in the cluster:

Writing long-form content

Creating long-form content is pretty straight forward, simply select Long - that's it!

Writing listicles

To create a listicle requires you to control both the length as well as the title:

  • Length: Short

  • Title: Listicle style for example:

    • "10 Best Beaches in Greece"

    • "Best 7 SEO Tips for Beginners"

This will result in an outline like:
